A traditional company for more than 120 years expert in mining and fine milling of clay minerals
Theodor Stephan KG is a real traditional family-owned company. Founded in 1902 in Essen by Theodor Stephan Senior, it began operating sand pits for foundry applications, processing blast furnace slag for road construction and trading in mineral products for the construction industry quickly built up a raw material supplier known throughout the Ruhr area.
Over the years, the company shifted the focus of its activities to the Westerwald, where several clay pits were acquired, including the ‘Auf dem Kreuz’ clay pit, which is located at the current main site in Burbach /NRW. The primary deposit is known for the ‘Kreuzton’, a finely decomposed slate clay, which is selected in four different varieties and is used in all main types of ceramics. Very fine raw kaolins are mined in the second Augusta-Oelkaut mine in Selters (Hesse). As processed kaolin powders, these are used as functional fillers in various demanding applications.
An important achievement of the company was the first use of vertical roller mills for drying clay. Today, this procedure is a standard in the ceramics industry. The company operates a grinding plant with two mills as well as a packaging unit for bagged and big bagged goods. Single-variety grinding and large silo capacities enable the production of a wide range of products, whereby compliance with the highest quality standards is guaranteed by a quality management system in accordance with ISO EN 9001:2015.
The company’s product portfolio includes a wide range of clay powders, kaolin powders, bentonite powders, loams and colored loams for a variety of ceramic and non-ceramic applications. DAVID MINERALS will be happy to assist you in selecting the right product.
